The Singapore Chinese Teachers’ Union (SCTU) was foundedin 1953. Welfare of Chinese teachers during the pre-independence period was poor. A  group of Chinese  teachers with a strong passion  for the Chinese Language, then founded the Singapore Chinese Teachers’ Union, with the aim of achieving better welfare for all Chinese teachers.

After SCTU was founded, generations after generations of its executive committee members worked tirelessly, sparing no effort to improve the welfare of Chinese teachers. To keep up with educational reforms, SCTU actively organized professional courses for Chinese teachers to upgrade themselves. SCTU also published series of publications, as well as The Chinese Journal, which is recognized internationally. As a union for Chinese teachers, SCTU grows day after day as a professional organization.

As life-long learning for teachers became increasingly important in the 21st century, SCTU collaborated with prestigious educational institutions overseas to start academic programs ranging from degree courses to PhD courses, for teachers who were keen on professional upgrades in these institutions. To cater to teachers who have little time for self-development, SCTU also organize short term professional courses for teachers during school holidays. Sparing no effort to promote the love for reading, SCTU has held reading clubs and reading club exchanges to Taiwan. Over a hundred Chinese teachers were trained as reading facilitators, equipped with the necessary skills to lead and promote reading in primary, secondary schools and junior colleges nation-wide.

With 60 years of history and the tireless labour which generations of executive committee members have put in, SCTU has scaled greater heights year after year. The Constant innovation, a good system of leadership succession and sound development plan of the union has transformed SCTU into an organisation united in heart and strength. SCTU continues to strive so as to make further contributions to nation and Chinese education, for years to come.
